I scaled the stems up (only when mag>1) with this line:
\temporary \override Stem.thickness = #(* 1.3 (max 1 mag))

I can't fathom why my patch triggered an error in mozart-hrn-3.ly.
Nor do I understand the error messages you posted.

IIUC, my patch is completely unrelated to that, so I wouldn't
know where to begin to fix the problem. Any guidance would be
appreciated.
