Regarding the text of the warning message: see issue 4133.
Getting issue 2507 done (which fidgets about a rather similar crash, but
your way of triggering it is a much more realistic example) was actually
rather a side effect of solving issue 3072. So it was sort of an
accidental bug fix. What better way to discover it than by accident?
