I don't know whether I have a good chance to figure out in a reasonable
amount of time how to do this properly, and this is an improvement over the
current situation. It may well be that a better fix will have to revert
this patch as part of the fix.
Let's put it on countdown the next cycle round. If no better fix (or
suggestions about a better fix) has been found or materialized until that
countdown completes, we might as well put it in for now. It will get the
behavior closer to desired, if not the code.
