The change is pushed to staging.
I like \first-of as much as \first-available, but I'm deferring to Trevor's
judgment. I'll create a ticket to tidy up the documentation. I notice
that the \null markup command muddles things by using the word "empty."
It's probably worth scanning for similar issues at the same time.
