Ok, so the next step would be to let the box version of whiteout (the old
default) take a number as a padding/thickness argument. That could be its
own patch.
Then (as I understand it) a second patch could introduce whiteout-style (as
both a markup and a grob property) and use that to determine the behavior
of whiteout (for both markups and grobs). It would drop the whiteout-box
property/command, leaving just whiteout. The default for whiteout-style
could be the old default, the box whiteout. The newer outline version of
whiteout could be used with a whiteout-style of outline.
I'll see if I can find time to work on this, but I may not be able to get
to it very soon...
