Thanks, this is now documented in Git, however the check in configure is
sill missing, maybe it's best to delay this until we include generated
fonts in released tarballs, as Werner suggested it.

I recently worked on Application Usage to update building and
installation instructions for packagers and builders.  This is
completely outside GDP, it's intended to make packagers' life easier
when they want to package 2.12, and avoid complaints about known details
and issues on LilyPond lists (and documenting such issues takes little
time in comparison with the time spent to investigate, so that's fine).
