That said, this looks like the main problem. Hmm... you're on
Debian, right? Did you install tetex-extra (or texlive-extra, I
guess it's called).

Thanks Graham. Debian-derivative, Ubuntu 8.04. I already had a ton of
texlive packages installed but went and downloaded some more that looked
likely to help:
dvipdfmx (1:20070518-2)
texlive-extra-utils (2007.dfsg.1-2)
texlive-font-utils (2007.dfsg.1-2)
texlive-fonts-extra (2007.dfsg.1-1)
texlive-generic-extra (2007.dfsg.1-1)
texlive-generic-recommended (2007-13)
texlive-xetex (2007.dfsg.1-2)
It's still compiling after five minutes so I think this might have done
the trick. I don't know which package was the critical one but I've
added all of them to my installation script so I won't forget them next
time I have to install the system. Unless I post on this thread again
you can assume the problem is fixed. Thanks again,
