It was added as a short-cut hack for
<< c1 {s4\< s s\> s\!} >>
I was somewhat surprised that the patch was accepted in the first
place, although part of the reason might have been because it was
a relatively new contributor. (IIRC -- this was 4 or 5 years
ago)
