Some quick comments:

- A very cool feature!

- The word "licensing" suggests some kind of contract that limits what we
can do. If so, this is probably at odds with LilyPond being under GPL.

- We can afford a $240 one-time fee, and Jan and I set up a
Netherlands-based foundation which still exists (I think). It could be a
licensee if we really need a non-person.

- the point and click data is typically voluminous, so you don't want to
leave them in files meant for distribution, and the data is useless anyway
without the .ly files. Conversely, Frescobaldi will generally not interpret
lilypond point&click data from random MIDI files downloaded from the
internet.

(Are people ever distributing lilypond midi files? Unless something has
dramatically changed, the playback quality of these files is poor, no?).

- Do we have any plans for sysex data that is useful beyond editing the
score?

To be honest, I don't see the problem with simply using the 0x7D/0x7C
non-commercial or research codes. After all, "If you don't think that your
idea or product is worth $240 a year for a SysEx ID, then just give it
away" - we are, in fact, giving it away.

If we were to use 0x7D/x7C, what is the worst that could happen, and how
likely is that scenario? We could protect ourselves by adding a custom
checksum to the P&C data to avoid accidental misinterpretation.

If thereby we flood the internet with crap midi files, and someone comes
and complains to us, we can always allocate the number.

In short, the lack of an official sysex number should not be a blocker to
the MR, IMO.
