David, I think that your approach is most in line with the production process I'd like. Thanks especially for your order-computing functions! Peter, I will also look at pdfbook to see how it compares to pdftk and whether that is more appropriate to incorporate. Abraham, those PDF-BatchBooklet utitilies look like precisely what I need, although in a UI rather than text/command line. I'm curious, does your interface rely on some of these same dependencies pdftk, pdfjam, pdfbook or pdfinfo? Now to get those dependencies installed...
