I am not sure "character" and "column" is an accurate description. From what I seem to remember (but I'd have to look it up), the numbers are a byte offset and a UTF-8 character position. The former may be 0-based. I don't think the latter takes anything like wide characters or tabs or combining characters into account. -- David Kastrup
