Duh, it wasn't as simple as that - if I have more than one staff (and in my 
case only the first one has different verses) the second verse ends up below 
the last stave, so in that case I have to resort to the double Lyrics solution.

Unfortunately, if there is more than one 'no repeat' bar the text is omitted by 
\omit LyricText, but not the hyphens ... (You can test this by adding a bar to 
the example.)
\skip does omit everything, but then I have to count the syllables - *very* 
brittle :-(
