I was sort of anticipating that… There are just too many situations where I 
suspected the “hack” wouldn’t work as expected.

Here are the convenience methods/functions I use:

lyricsOff = {
  \temporary \omit LyricText
  \temporary \omit LyricHyphen
  \temporary \omit LyricExtender
  \temporary \omit LyricSpace
}
lyricsOn = {
  \undo \omit LyricText
  \undo \omit LyricHyphen
  \undo \omit LyricExtender
  \undo \omit LyricSpace
}
