Again, I may not be understanding what you mean, but there's also (as 
part of the rehearsal mark stuff), rather than "\mark \default", you can 
do "\mark "3A" " or whatever. The only snag with that is I don't think 
it circles or boxes or whatever - you'll need to work out how to do that.
