If you look at the thread I linked to, you’ll see the point: one should be able 
to say

\subnumber #lowercase % or whatever
c1
c1
c1
\endSubNumber
c1
c1

and see measure numbers 1 2 3a 3b 3c 4 5, without the need to explicitly write 
a \mark.
