I would not call this an internal problem; rather, it is a kind of grammar that you have to adhere to. In the actual music, the slur is indeed beginning *before* the bar line. David’s advice is an important one, in that you do have to indicate slur ( or beam [ after the note with which either of them is beginning, so that the note and the element(s) are attached.
