You are confused. Slurs are _always_ attached to a note (both slur start and slur end), and the respective ( and ) is written after the note it applies to. The slur starts or ends with the note that the parentheses are put behind. The bar line has nothing at all to do with the slurs. If you write | ( ... then the slur has no note written before it that it could attach to. It is briefly mentioned in the Learning Manual as <https://lilypond.org/doc/v2.26/Documentation/learning/slurs> and, well, not mentioned at all in the Notation Reference <https://lilypond.org/doc/v2.25/Documentation/notation/expressive-marks-as-curves#slurs>" Maybe it should get more prominent mention in either. -- David Kastrup
