The difference between [ and { is:
- -) [ is typically used to group all instruments of a certain group
(e.g. all
woodwinds, all brass, all strings, all vocal voices)
- -) { is used to group two staves for the same instrument (e.g. V.I
and V.II,
or Fl.I and Fl.II, Ob.I and Ob.II, etc.)
That also explains why piano and harp staves use {, because it is
just one
staff for right and one for left hand.
