Good grief, semantics. Yes, Kieren, tweaking \tempo isn't well explained, and yes Neil and Joseph, The exact snippet is rendered obsolete by the \tempo command, and yes, everybody, there are things that \tempo cannot do (metric modulation quarter = dotted quarter or eigth = eigth, among other things), for which markup is still required.
