Yes, I created an alternative that also merges multimeasure rests. It is at
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1228
and an updated version at
http://code.google.com/p/lilymusic/source/browse/trunk/include/merge-rests.ily

This include file could be added to LilyPond. It still has the limitation that 
it only supports two voices.
