I wonder if this could be something related with the way the host is configured. I was able to run l-m-c with the same images at both 32 and 64-bits machines. I know that if you have scratchbox installed, or any other software that changes the qemu-arm-static path at your binfmt config, l-m-c will fail, but I don't believe you'd end up with a segfault.
