You might want to take a look at the new dec alpha chipset, they are in
the 500+ MHZ range, however they developed it in a way that is quite
cheap.

You might just be able to find a decent 500mhz one for less than $3k in
the near future, if not already.

I don't know if they plan on changing, but so far, the unix ie port is
only available for solaris... I have no idea if they will bother porting
it to other unices.

I recently acquired a new Permedia 2 based Fire Gl Pro 1000.  It supports
GL acceleration.  It is amazingly fast compared to the Millenium I had
before.  I even tried putting back in the Millenium afterwards, it was
unbareable.  It's amazing how fast you adjust to a new speed. ;)

It has one flaw though, (not really but...)  since its a brand new piece
of hardware, it is unfortunately not supported by any X servers, so until
some hacker gets ahold of one, I'm stuck in console mode.

Unfortunately the stuff that is used for graphics work, tends to be only
supported under nt/95 :(
