Me too. I think LyX is good for people afraid to dive right in to writing
LaTeX documents, but I never use it because I prefer Emacs/LaTeX.

I think LyX is also good for some very complex documents, like newsletters
with illustrations and multiple columns -- Jeff Covey posted URLs on here a
while ago for a newsletter he did with LyX. It looked like it would be very
hard to do something like that without LyX.

The trouble I have with LaTeX is that it's sometimes difficult to find the
right style/package for a given layout. While the CTAN archives have a lot
of great stuff, it usually takes me a long time to find just the right
package to use -- a comprehensive list of packages with descriptions and
documentation would be welcome.
