Hi,
I am trying to build the same type of system,
and my solution has been to go with an AMD K6-2 w/3D
Now Processor an either a FIC 503+ or an EPOX MVP3E-M
Super Seven motherboard. I have not quite made my
mind up as of yet which board to go with, the FIC
being an AT board which I could usr in my current
case or the EPOX which is an ATX board. This I can
say, I have seen the FIC503+ w/AMD k6-2 for sale at a
bunch of different places on the net for about $250,
add 128 meg of pc100 ram for about $150 to $200 and
you have yourself the start of a screaming system
that still is taking advantage of the latest 100Mhz
bus speed and AGP graphics. I have gotten word from a
couple of people who said the the K6-2 works fine
under Linux, and best of all I do believe that they
are trying to implement the 3D Now instructions into
Mesa (the Open GL like library for Linux). The way I
see it, it would make much more sense to save $500 -
$700 on the motherboard + chip and put more cash into
the ram, a great graphics card and sound card if you
want. I have the most of the other devices on my
p133, zip, scanner, sb64 gold, 17" monitor and
monster 3D. For about $250 + up you can get a great
AGP 8meg card and that is really one of the most
important parts of a good graphics system.
Hope this helps,
Jeremy
