This could *probably* be put together in Cecilia. It might run slow, and
it requires you to learn csound syntax to put together each effect, but
the big advantage would be 1) not starting from scratch with C code, and
2) easy to modify the interface (within certain bounds). Realtime input
and output IS possible in Csound, though I for one have never tried it.
As they say, "there may be issues."
Or you could try a Tcl/Tk interface to RTcmix, though I don't know about
realtime input there...

Well, when I was shopping, their tech support answered my email in
reasonably timely fashion. But the guy who answered (same guy each time)
didn't seem to have much personal experience with Linux, he just
forwarded some posts on how to get CS423x cards working via a warm boot
from DOS (which I think is still necessary for one of the synth
features, I forget what). Oh yeah, and he confirmed that the S/PDIF
output is not at all supported in linux. (Not like I have anything to
plug it into).
