rms was always behind it 100%, but the fsf's book publisher was skeptical at
first; after running some figures by him and a market study of existing
books/manuals, it was good to go. part of it (i'm guessing) was that the fsf
has never really published a book like this before - it's for
non-programmers and it assumes you're running the linux kernel...
