Thanks for the replies and the links. I'll check
them out.
For the record, the libmikmod library is supported
by the SDL_Mixer library which provides for sound
on SDL (Simple Directmedia Layer, http://www.libsdl.org ),
as I have since found out.
I used MikMod on the IT files I was refered to,
which worked, but it had a lot of bad dropouts as
if it were having serious timing problems. My
system is not especially fast (it's a Pentium 90),
so that may be the issue, though I wouldn't have
expected it to be a problem (RealAudio files play
fine on this system, for example). I'll try some
of the other utilities you pointed out to me to
see if they work better.
