Definitely +1 the Aeropress. It does a better job of extracting what you want from the bean and filtering out what you don't want. Some say that the paper filter removes carcinogens, so that addresses the health issue. The filter disc is tiny and thin so it uses (and costs) way less material than, e.g., a Melitta filter.
I use mine almost every day. It's easy for 1 or 2 cups but a little clunky for larger amounts.

Since you're replacing a coffee maker, you'll need to heat the water.
