The outside lights at the Greenridge condominium go off (on a timer) at
midnight. Moreover, a few years ago we replaced these lights with
downward-directed ones that shine less light up into the atmosphere, and also
use less electricity.

Subject: Re: [LincolnTalk] Light Pollution in Lincoln

The lights at the PUBLIC SCHOOL buildings are on all night. I do not
understand a need for this. Adverse effect on wild life and on human life for
the neighbors.

Interesting topic that goes unnoticed. I think there is a lot of low hanging
fruit to make improvement. For example, my multi family unit runs dozens of
carport lights all night long. You can’t switch them off. Perhaps at one time
everyone worked third shift. But now, everyone has a flashlight on their smart
phone should they be out at 3 am. Since we have streetlights in all the
open parking areas it seems unnecessary!

Did you know that Lincoln lighting at night has roughly doubled in the past 10
years? Why should we care? I urge you to listen to James Lowenthal's
rivieting talk which was sponsored by the LLCT.

If you want to skip the introduction, the talk begins at 3:30.

From Dr Lowenthal:
Light pollution poses a serious threat to all living species from salamanders
to birds, from pollinating insects to fish, from coral to humans -- and it's
getting worse at 2% per year globally, twice the rate of population growth.
All species are affected by light pollution, and some face extinction because
of it. Humans risk elevated rates of cancer, diabetes, obesity and depression
due to artificial light at night. Read the opinions of top scientists in the
BioEnvironment chapter, including extensive references in the scientific
literature, of this major new report to the United Nations:
https://www.iau.org/news/announcements/detail/ann21002/

Light pollution also wastes energy and money -- 1.5 billion KWH and $180M per
year in Massachusetts alone — and adds to greenhouse gas emissions.
