Note that hard wired smoke detectors come in two flavors: with and without
backup batteries. In the latter case batteries would still run out, albeit
at a lower rate.

Note that many newer smoke detectors come with batteries with a 10 year
life. Since certain types of smoke detectors are supposed to be replaced
every 10 years, the batteries are often not user replaceable.

Wiring a house full of smoke detectors could be quite expensive and, as
noted above, may not actually solve the problem of needing to access them
(once every ten years).

Retrofitting an existing house with sprinklers would be even more
expensive. I suppose the savings in house insurance might pay for it after
several decades. :-) They do add a margin of safety, however.
