Re: your signature, Sara, I completely understand and value transparency and its context in the long history of Town Meeting, and your choice to be transparent in that particular way may very well always be the right choice for you, and that's great. It's asking all others to do the same – especially without taking some time to critically reflect on that – that I was pushing against in the thread about the drag show. Not everyone feels that kind of security, and I don't think it's fair to ask everyone to just get over it.
I, for instance, as a singer-songwriter, have a strange relationship with my audience – people see into my life, my history, and psyche, and feel like they're my friends. I've learned the hard way that giving those people information that seemed safe has resulted in very blurred boundaries and people acting like I owe them access to me. Also, having grown up in the age of the budding internet, I was taught (for very good reason) that giving personal information like your address to ANYONE you don't know irl (in real life) was a scary, scary, scary, bad thing to do. I'd love to think LincolnTalk and Town Meeting are places where we can act as though we know everyone personally, but that doesn't make it true. Would it be ideal to live in a world where everyone feels the same level of safety and mutual respect, such that sharing information like one's full name or address doesn't feel stressful or scary, again for good reason? Absolutely. That's not the world we all live in right now. That's all I'm asking folks to think about.
