And, it is complicated by our typography and history. Most of our roads follow cart paths of the 18th and 19th centuries. Kerry Glass has done extensive research on the road networks- their origins and evolution. It is collected in a monograph that is available in Town Archives.
The twists and turns create challenges for the necessary sight lines to allow for the addition of both crosswalks and speed bumps/ humps/tables. As Jane noted, Public Safety, especially the Fire Dept. and ambulances have concerns as those bumps dramatically slow response time, and, it could be an issue of life or death.
