Re mouse traps, and cats:

They make Have-a-Heart traps for mice. The bait (e.g. peanut butter) lures the
mouse inside, a grid drops and traps but doesnn’t kill the mouse. No blood, no
gore. You then need to take the trap outside, preferably slightly farther than
your neighbor’s yard, and release the mouse. Hopefully it will enjoy its
new-found freedom and stay out there.

I’ve read that simply having a cat, even if it doesn’t hunt, is an effective
deterrent. Apparently cats release pheronomes (or whatever) that mice can
detect and decide that it’s a good plan to stay away.

Other opinions welcome.

June

We have aggressively sealed up any and all potential holes in our house and
then use snap traps. We still catch a few every year but it's gotten a lot
better than when we started.

Also, outdoor cats kill birds, which isn't good. On the other hand, poisoning
mice (who then leave the house sick and easy prey) kills mouse predators, which
also isn't good (and creates a vicious circle). Does anyone have success with
trapping?

And some cats are too lazy to hunt, ignore the mice, or are afraid of them!

I’m surprised that no one has offered the obvious solution – get a cat!

Here's a summary of the recommendations so far. I would note that it is a
