I, too, inherited a large Steinway years ago. I did not have a place for it, and ended up donating it to the Powers Music School in Belmont. My father (who was a harpsichord builder) used to say that pianos have souls, and it didn’t feel right to sell it since I had inherited it for nothing. The students at the school have enjoyed it for many years now. The school put a little plaque on it saying where it came from and I feel that I’m keeping my grandmother’s spirit alive — she was also a concert pianist.
- Sent from iPhone. Typed by thumb. Excuse misspellings! Dear friends in Lincoln, I am writing on the off chance someone may have ideas about what I can do with my grandmother's Model M Steinway baby grand. 1927 was one of just a few years that were considered the best years ever for Steinway production. It's been in our family since 1945 - and meticulously maintained by my grandmother, who was a concert pianist.
Right now, it is languishing in CA, and I am willing to drive out and get it, but don't have anywhere to keep it. Our family will eventually move to Vermont, and we *might* be able to bring it there - but mostly - I really want to move the piano somewhere where it will be played. I know I am biased, but there is really no sound like this piano. It is very special. The wood is dinged in places, but it was re-keyed and re-stringed in the early 2000's.
If anyone would be interested in housing it and using it on loan, buying it (best offer), or have any ideas about where it might be of use to someone - other musician friends, or students, will you please let me know?
Old flyer attached for pics.
