We use a heater plus a bubbler in winter to oxygenate the water even if
it's iced over. You stop feeding them when the water gets below 45 degrees
— they seem to hibernate but somehow don't look any skinnier in the spring.
Our koi pond is rather small and I now wish we hadn't gotten nine fish --
some will have to be liberated soon as they have grown (note: we have both
koi and goldfish and one of the species grows much faster than the other
but I can't remember which.)
