Dear LincolnTalk,
Just a note of caution about “liberating” gold fish or Koi into the wild in
case anyone might think of it: as I understand it, in that context they
basically become invasive species, outcompeting native flora and fauna for
resources and also leading to water quality issues. If you need to liberate
your fish, I know that Tropic Isle Aquarium store in Framingham was always
willing to take ours (snd they are awesome!).

We use a heater plus a bubbler in winter to oxygenate the water even if it's
iced over. You stop feeding them when the water gets below 45 degrees — they
seem to hibernate but somehow don't look any skinnier in the spring. Our koi
pond is rather small and I now wish we hadn't gotten nine fish -- some will
have to be liberated soon as they have grown (note: we have both koi and
goldfish and one of the species grows much faster than the other but I can't
remember which.)

We had a very deep pond at 9200’ in the mountains of Colorado. The koi wintered
over.No heron in the Sangre de Cristo mountains …at least at that altitude.
Good luck.

Also if the pond is not deep enough (ours is 4.5’ deep) then heron will be able
to wade and hunt them voraciously.
With a shallow pond it also makes it much easier for raptors to hunt them.

A couple of koi notes (from experience):
   - They can slowly grow quite large (up to 3')
   - If the pool is less than 3'-4' deep it runs the risk of completely
freezing in the winter; either a pond heater has to be added or the koi brought
indoors
   - koi are relatively 'dirty' fish for their size; some kind of filtration is
often needed
One interesting fact is that koi kept in ideal conditions can outlive their
owner.

We have a very modest reflection pool off our entry with a few field stones and
bubbler.  In warm months a few flowering plants.
I'm planning to add a few koi next spring and am currently in the "discovery"
phase.
If anyone has a koi pond in Lincoln and would be willing to share experience
please let me know.
