Here is a little more detail about the news Chris shared two days ago.
It is great news that on 6/21, the state found the draft environmental
impact report ("DEIR") to be inadequate, primarily because of its claim
without evidence that the additional hangars proposed for the
Hanscom private airfield would not increase private jet traffic. The
project proponents therefore will be required to prepare a Supplemental
DEIR that would address the above issue with more completeness and
precision. For details, you can read the first few pages of that 6/21
determination letter here
<http://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0/r/day/2024/6/20>.
This is a great first step on the path to stopping this project, which most
observers believe would be a "carbon bomb" due to the great increase in
global warming emissions that we expect it would cause. (See 2-page
explainer here
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AuCLdJWU36BjlcC3-Tss89NRBnsyDQkM/view>.)
- A Supplemental DEIR that provides a more correct estimate of that
increase won't automatically stop the project, because the board of
directors of MassPort would still have the legal authority to approve the
project.
- However, if the Supplemental DEIR confirms a great increase in global
warming emissions, that will provide a stronger public opinion lever to
dissuade MassPort from going ahead - in part by pressing the Governor and
other public officials to also pressure MassPort.
Thank you to everyone who submitted comments on the DEIR (including this

excellent
letter from our Select Board) or otherwise has supported the campaign

to do, but we have gotten past a crucial milestone, so let's take
cheer from this moment.
