I was in a performance of Mahler’s second symphony singing in the Harvard Summer School Chorus with the Dartmouth Summer School Orchestra. On the bus back to Cambridge, the moon landing was the main topic of conversation, after an exhilarating concert. It was a magical evening.

The group worked with the sf writer Hal Clement to assemble an anthology of short stories that had been written in the past predicting the first landing on the moon. I think it was called "First Flights to the Moon" - I have a copy of it around somewhere. The thing that struck me was that not a single one of those stories anticipated that the expedition would be in real time video communication with the earth so that the entire world could see that first step. We indulged in some then-illegal substances, and gathered in front of an old b&w TV. What struck me was not the grainy images, but the sound: I was really hearing voices from the moon in real time! That seemed most extraordinary. My son had a show and tell in the fourth grade where we showed the kids the actual NASA film of the landing. A helmet and gloves for them to try on. It was pretty cool but also pretty stinky :-) Sent from my iPhone On Jul 20, 2024, at 6:41 PM, JMG at Lincolntalk <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: An old friend collected these stories 25 years ago: https://wherewereyou.com/ I think you can still add more.
