Good evening, Lincoln! I’ve been figuring out ways to engage my 12 year old son in my beekeeping; he’s not at all ready to deal with bees, but he’s interested in products, website development, etc. With a broken finger, redirecting his attention away from screens has been another factor!
To encourage him, I ordered “skin said yes” goat’s milk soap base, and he has two batches of honey soap under his belt. He is now experimenting with skin-calming essential oils (after his first random mix of peppermint and vanilla). His second batch is chamomile and jasmine, and it’s so good that I’m already addicted (this, coming from someone who usually avoids scents!). The soap is 20% Lincoln honey, 80% Skin Said Yes goats milk soap base, and a total of 25 drops of chamomile and jasmine essential oil. Emmett’s task today was figuring how much each bar of soap cost to make and how to price it per ounce (he averaged other honey soaps out there, although they were mixed with other ingredients and I’m doubtful they are 20% honey). Nonetheless, he came up with $1.50 per ounce based on those soaps, and he’s happy with the profit margin. The bars are 1-2 ounces, and come in whimsical shapes (currently: dinosaur, flowers, leaves, and baby bullet - haha! - because those were the silicon molds we had on hand!). I’m putting this out there because he is excited about the prospects. I’m not yet ready to start selling honey; I’ve still got to do some of the minor paperwork to go in the direction I’ve decided to take this (somewhere beyond hobby), but he’s starting to build up a little inventory (and it’s making me either hungry or thirsty for hot tea). Is there interest? He has a kit of 20 essential oils, so he can also tailor it to your needs. In addition to goat’s milk, he also has glycerin soap base. The actual cost of the soap will depend on its weight, but it should be around $1.50-$2 per bar depending on the mold used. There is no minimum as long as delivery can be coupled to errands around town! Warmly, Terry Kay (and Emmett)
