There are a number of commercial products for adding water resistance to extension cord connections. Try searching for "extension cord connection cover" on Amazon to get an idea. Some outdoor extensions come with what is claimed to be integrated waterproof connectors.
Try to minimize or eliminate any tripping hazards.
