Good question… how do we know what is true?

Also please consider that a pet sitter is usually paid by the day for overnight care. The typical rate of pay equates to under $5 an hour.

So if a pet has the nasty habit of eating its own poo and the pet sitter does not prevent that. It’s their fault?

Please let’s consider that dogs especially depending on their history and demeanor can be adverse to their owners leaving town.

Pet Sitters beware!

First, it's libel if it's written, not slander.

Second, it's only libel if it's a false statement that damages someone's reputation. Not if it's true. Do you know if the initial review was true?

The reviews that were posted were, yes, emotional, but also contained a lot of specifics that could be useful to someone making the decision whether or not to hire someone. Specificity is often (although not always) an indication that something happened.

As someone who hires pet sitters, I absolutely want to know the details of the experiences that others have had so I can make my decisions based on my needs and concerns. Inviting someone into your home to take care of a beloved pet is a risky proposition. As stated, most gig providers are not bonded and insured. That in itself calls for the need for more detailed reviews. Sure, they are at the mercy of having a gig canceled, but the people hiring service providers are at the mercy of someone who is in their home taking care of their pet and if something goes wrong, the impact can be catastrophic.

A star rating system can be misleading because you don't know what caused a specific rating. Case in point -- I received a 1* review from an uber driver. Perhaps, if you knew that he got lost going to LaGuardia airport and circled the airport three times, missing my terminal each time, you might be more sympathetic to my irritation. In fact, I opted not to leave him a review at all because he was new to the job and, in the end, my flight was delayed so I didn't miss it.

Whether the service provider lives in Lincoln or not is mostly irrelevant. There are plenty of people who live in Lincoln who do not use Lincoln Talk. If you choose to notify the service provider, they would be welcome to post their own response or let you do it on their behalf. What I value about reviews from Lincoln Talk is they are from neighbors, so are more trustworthy than those left on Yelp or Google, many of which are Astroturf.

I agree with you Pat. Keep it short. The reality is that some people in this town feel compelled to tell their version of events complete with all the dirty details. Most of the service industry workers who are being reviewed are not privileged enough to live in Lincoln so we are not privy to their version on Lincoln Talk.

I love the recommendations and use them often. The middle road is usually the best, and no stars please- not enough info. One or two short sentences are very helpful and give enough information, followed up with offer to respond to questions.

I am asking if all the details were a necessity as opposed to just saying “I don’t” recommend “. Perhaps a star rating system would be more neighborly.

This place is for both bad and good reviews. This is not the first bad review which was by far not slanderous and yes you are right you were emotional which obviously affected your view on the review. As others said there was nothing wrong with the opinion from one poster. And I for one am glad it was left

Dear Neighbors,

As a follow up to the emotional yet slanderous review posted yesterday about a pet sitter, I wonder if there is a protocol on LT to protect gig workers from this sort of attack? Gig workers are not professionals as someone suggested. They do not have insurance and typically do not ask for a deposit when agreeing to set aside time for the requested task. They are at the whim of the individuals who request their services which could be cancelled without compensation . Posting reviews without sorted details seems more neighborly. By all means include your contact info if willing to take the time to give another neighbor a review of your experience . Neighbors what do you think?
