Sadly, many of the things our elders valued are not as highly desirable to the younger generation. As an example, my late mother had a wedding gift of a large set (12 place settings plus serving pieces) of sterling silver, in what I thought was a lovely pattern, which she cherished and used (and polished!) throughout her life. She thought that she was leaving us a huge legacy, greater in value to all her other possessions (which included a Steinway grand piano). When after her passing we had these appraised, I was shocked to learn that the silver was only worth its melt-down value. I’m glad that Mother never knew this. We ended up simply giving it to one of our nieces who had not asked for any silver for her own wedding. I did enquire on Replacements.com (where I also have bought but not sold). They offered more than the appraised value, but not a lot. June
