Andy, I use custom fonts in many of my Director projects (projectors, Dir 10, Windows and Mac OS X) that include almost all characters in the 128-255 decimal range. I have never seen the problem you're describing. Like yours, my embedded fonts are named with the default asterisk, and like in your case, my users may or may not have the same custom font installed in their system (named without the asterisk). I've never seen a problem. I wonder if something else may be involved that you haven't detected yet.
