The issue is not the custom font, it is when trying to render an HTML member that uses the font.
If it in not installed on the user's system, the font tag gets dropped if you are pointing to an uninstalled, embedded font resource.
Have you used your custom fonts with an HTML member?

I have never seen the problem you're describing. Like yours, my embedded fonts are named with the default asterisk, and like in your case, my users may or may not have the same custom font installed in their system (named without the asterisk). I've never seen a problem. I wonder if something else may be involved that you haven't detected yet.
