Hi,
I am working on a project in Director that I plan on releasing both as a
web site and as a projector (Mac and PC). Much of the project is already
built and has been rather large in terms of time input, so changing
development environments is not feasible.
I am working on a Mac in OSX (10.3.9), using Director MX (not 2004).
Question 1)
I was wondering if anyone knew of an alternative to SequenceXtra? I am a
bit shy of the licensing fees since Sibelius took it on board.
I want to use it for writing algorithms that will produce a musical
soundscape. SequenceXtra appeals because it will allow me to write midi
code that will talk to the synthesisers built into most computers these
days (either as part of their sound card or in software like Quicktime
Musical Instruments). This appeals because of file size issues but also
because of having an reasonably large range of instruments to choose
from and move between. Also having access to attack and decay features
might be useful, though this is less of a concern.
I should probably point out that I want to generate the midi code on the
fly and not use pre-written songs etc.. Various aspects of the code,
like the pitch, instruments, volume, duration, and possibly attack and
decay will be generated on the fly.
An alternative to this would be to use sampled sounds. However this
would probably limit my sound palette, be much larger in file size, and
limit some the of the choices I would have for the sounds, like duration.
Question 2)
I could perhaps use Midi sounds embedded in a Quicktime movie, but
(Question 2a) I am not sure how accessing individual notes would go, or
(Q2b) even how quick access to a variety of Quicktime movies or a long
QT movie would be. (Q2c) And is it possible to keep a QT in ram or is
always a streaming concern?
(PS. If all this sounds familiar, I made a similar request early last
year. At the time SequenceXtra seemed to be the go, but the new
licensing fees have me a bit worried as I may have a lot of hits but no
income from the project.)
Thanks,
John
