Just answering this question, of several interesting ones that you have
asked.

You can issue a 'playnote' command in QuickTime but you need to use wired
actions to do it. Beyond the QuickTime API itself (C++, cocoa, java), you
can get at those actions with two tools, LiveStage and GoLive.

There's not a way to send wired messages from Director to QuickTime,
unfortunately.
