The setPref() / getPref() commands cause a folder to be created in the same folder as the application. But what if it's running of a CD ROM? It can't create the text file on the CD. Is there a way to get setPrefs to write to a specific location?

It depends on the version of director you use.
AFAIK versions prior to 10 didn't do anything, when running from a ROM location, since D10 setpref writes to the users prefs folder in case of running from a ROM location, so that it can always be used regardless of the environment. If your director version is < 10 you'll have to use fileio (buddyAPI or filextra4) to write to the users prefs folder.
