It's an old term from earlier versions of Director. It used to be 
that if you tried to alter a sprite, it would ignore you. To get it 
to listen you would puppet it (I guess the metaphor is like 
connecting strings to a doll would make the doll controllable, 
without making the doll into a puppet, you wouldn't be able to move 
it).

One of the new features that came with Director 6 was auto-puppeting. 
 From that point on you could set most things, and the sprite would 
change, without you having to specifically puppet it. There were 
exceptions, but it's not worth getting into that much detail.
