Not sure what a Plynth kiosk is, but no, there's a very good chance 
that those readers are serial, and the people who set them up had to 
get special drivers. Some more recent ones could simulate a PC AT 
keyboard, and the current ones can do USB keyboard simulation, which 
works on any computer that can take a USB keyboard. That's the kind 
I'm using.
