The #internetConnected property is known to be flaky. For example, if I unplug my network cable (that gives me access to a shared DSL) it still reports #connected. The ONLY reliable way is to suck it and see. Try downloading a small file from a known good site. If that fails, try a file from a different site (in case the first is down). If 2 or 3 fail you can be reasonably certain that the user isn't connected.
